This volume gives the other side of the picture which until now has been pandering merely to the taste of chauvinistic grandeur. 1910 at Ujiar, district Ballia, UP, Dr. Bhagwat Saran BUpadhyaya went to school at Ballia and studied at the universities of Banaras, Allahabad and Lucknow. A freedom fighter, he was sentenced twice to terms of imprisonment. Dr. Upadhyaya was a globe-trotter. He lectured at a number of universities in Europe and in the two Americas and was decorated with honoris causa degrees. By discipline he was a historian and an archaeologist. He founded at Hyderabad the Institute of Asian Studies to carry on researches in related subjects. His first appointment was at the Banaras Hindu University. Later he served as the officer-in-charge of the Archaeological Section of the Provincial Museum, Lucknow. Until 1946 he worked as the Professor of History at the Birla College, Pilani. From 1957 to 1964 he edited the Hindi Encyclopaedia of the government of India. He was an expert on the committee for drawing a panel of names for the vice-chancellorship of the Vikram University at Ujjain. He was the Professor and Head of the School of Studies in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, and Dean of the Social Sciences of the Vikram University at Ujjain. Dr. Upadhyaya wrote more than a hundred books on varied subjects ranging from historical research to belles lettres and literary criticism. His outstanding research works are India in Kalidas, Women in Rigveda, The Ancient World. He died at Mauritius where he was serving as ambassador for India. ISBN 81-7007-098-8
